HEALTH CARE CHALLENGES IN LEBANON & THE REGION

SOCIOANALYTIC’S FOUR WEEK COURSE IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES AT THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN BEIRUT PROVIDES SHORT COURSE MEMBERS WITH A COMPREHENSIVE OVERVIEW OF THE HEALTH AND HEALTH CARE RELATED CHALLENGES FACING LEBANON AND THE IMMEDIATE REGION AS IT GRAPPLES THE VOLATILE POLITICAL SHIFTS IN THE REGION, ESPECIALLY THE CIVIL CONFLICT IN SYRIA AND THE SUBSEQUENT MASSIVE INFLUX OF REFUGEES FROM SYRIA INTO LEBANON.  

WEEK ONE: FOUNDATIONAL COURSE WORK (courses will be delivered in English)

  • THE POLITICAL ECONOMY, CULTURE, RECENT HISTORY, AND CONTEMPORARY POLITICS OF LEBANON 

  • THE STRUCTURE OF THE LEBANESE STATE

  • OVERVIEW OF EPIDEMIOLOGY, HEALTH POLICY, AND THE OPERATIONALIZATION OF HEALTH SERVICES AMONG VULNERABLE POPULATIONS IN LEBANON


WEEK TWO: FIELD VISITS

  • SHORT COURSE MEMBERS WILL TOUR SELECT GOVERNMENT MINISTRIES AND FACILITIES, MEET GOVERNMENT STAFF, VISIT UNITED NATIONS AND OTHER NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS WORKING ON PUBLIC HEALTH AND REFUGEE POLICY IN LEBANON. THIS WILL INCLUDE, WHERE RELEVANT, VISITS TO HOSPITALS AND CLINICS, OPERATIONS CENTERS SERVING REFUGEE POPULATIONS AND MEETING COMMUNITY LEADERS FROM DIFFERENT POLITICAL COMMUNITIES AND CONSTITUENCIES.

  • IN WEEKS 3 AND 4, SHORT COURSE MEMBERS WILL SPEND 12-15 DAYS WORKING AT SELECT GOVERNMENTAL, UN OR NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS.

ONGOING: NETWORKING, RESEARCH, AND SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

  • SHORT COURSE MEMBERS WILL NETWORK WITH IN-COUNTRY PROFESSIONALS IN A VARIETY OF PROFESSIONAL, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXTS AND PROGRAMS. WE EXPECT PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS -- GIVEN THEIR ADVANCED LEVELS OF TRAINING AND INTERESTS  -- TO BUILD COLLABORATIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH PROFESSIONAL COUNTERPARTS AT AUB AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS OPERATING IN LEBANON.  WE ANTICIPATE THAT THESE RELATIONSHIPS WILL LEAD TO FUNDED RESEARCH AND SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES AND SERVE AS A NATURAL INCUBATOR FOR NEW IDEAS AND PROJECTS.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • UNIVERSITY FACULTY, GRADUATE STUDENTS (MASTERS, PHD AND POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWS), AND/OR PROFESSIONALS WORKING IN CHARITABLE FOUNDATIONS AND/OR INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS. WE WILL CONSIDER LEARNERS FROM OTHER BACKGROUNDS ON A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS.

PROGRAM INSTRUCTORS

  • FACULTY FROM THE AUB'S HISTORY, ANTHROPOLOGY, POLITICAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENTS AND THE FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES (FHS) WILL DELIVER ACADEMIC LECTURES AND SEMINARS.   FHS WILL SERVE AS THE PROGRAM'S LIAISONS TO GOVERNMENT MINISTRIES, UNITED NATIONS ORGANIZATIONS AND NGOS.

PROGRAM CONTENT

  • WEEKS ONE AND TWO:  INTENSIVE LECTURE SERIES COVERING LEBANON´S POLITICAL ECONOMY, HISTORY, AND CONTEMPORARY POLITICS.  VISITS TO GOVERNMENT MINISTRIES, UN ORGANIZATIONS AND NGOS, MEETINGS WITH LEADERS OF DISPLACED POPULATION GROUPS AND DISPLACED PERSONS RESIDING IN LEBANON.

  • WEEKS THREE AND FOUR: MINI-INTERNSHIP.  THIS DIRECTED FIELD EXPERIENCE WILL PLACE PARTICIPANTS WITH GOVERNMENT MINISTRIES, UNITED NATIONS ORGANIZATIONS OR NGOS TO EXAMINE SPECIFIC PUBLIC HEALTH CHALLENGES, SUCH AS REFUGEE HEALTH, HEALTH CARE ACCESS, INFECTION CONTROL AND DISEASE SURVEILLANCE.

CULTURAL PROGRAMMING AND FREE TIME

  • SOCIOANALYTICS WILL ARRANGE TOURS TO CULTURAL SITES, GROUP DINNERS AND DINNER MEETINGS WITH LEADERS AND PROFESSIONALS WORKING IN THE STUDY COUNTRY´S VARIOUS MINISTRIES AND NGOS.  STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN AMPLE FREE TIME TO EXPLORE BEIRUT ON THEIR OWN AS WELL.

CULTURAL EVENTS, GROUND TRANSPORTATION

  • IN-COUNTRY STAFF WILL PROVIDE CHAPERONE SERVICES FOR SHORT COURSE MEMBERS TO FACILITATE VISITS AND LOCAL TRANSPORTATION.

SECURITY

  • AS NEEDED, SOCIOANALYTICS WILL ARRANGE FOR SECURITY ESCORTS AND TRANSLATION SERVICES FOR LECTURES, TOURS AND VISITS.

ACCOMMODATION

  • SOCIOANALYTICS WILL PROCURE LODGING FOR PARTICIPANTS IN BEIRUT'S CULTURALLY VIBRANT NEIGHBORHOODS.
